Fraternity Lineage Perl App
« on: March 17, 2003, 23:54:47 »
Mike,

I'm interested in finding/building/outsourcing, whatever, an app that will basically act as an online genealogy tracker... but not in the traditional way.

I was in a fraternity when I was in college... not an Ivy-League, stereotypical, gung-ho fraternity that you see in the movies. Mine was normal.

Anyway, I'm trying to find an app that I could possibly customize to allow me to track our fraternity lineage.

Basically, every member has a "Big Brother". And any member can sponsor several "Little Brothers". Some members never sponsor "Little Brothers", so their trees can end. I want to track our lineage back to our founders that started our chapter in the early 70's.

There's traditional genealogy Perl scripts out there that list a mother and father. In my specific case, I'd like most the functionality of a typical genealogy app, but without a mother. I guess it would look more like a directory hierchy. But I want to grant access to any member of our fraternity to update.

Do you have any ideas? Is this something that could easily be written? Are you interested?

Anything's possible, but I think for me to take on another project at this point would probably be akin to asking for a divorce, so I'd better not. ;)

The only thing that comes to mind is "The Brain" (http://www.thebrain.com) though that's not Perl based, it can be converted to the web... I'm sure there are Perl scripts out there that can be adapted. Check www.sourceforge.net if you haven't already...

P.S. Thanks for the explaination of your avatar! :D

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I've been looking. Looking everywhere. I'll check out those links, even though I've already been on www.sourceforge.net (one of my favs). I think that's where I orginally found album.pl, if my memory serves me correctly.

And, yeah... the cookie jar. Isn't that funny!? It's one of those things that just stick in your head forever. I'm surprised it hasn't broken in 34 years. It sits on top of my fridge, and people ask about it. It's just so silly looking, I love that thing.
