Mike please install imagemagick for me
« on: December 18, 2003, 20:20:05 »
Mike thanks for the pro install of album.pl

now please preform professional install of imagemagick for us.

you need access root shell access, this is no problem as the site is devoted to album.pl, so that users do not upload to our main server.

I will private message or email password if you have not kept them from the install of album.pl.

Is paypal alright for payment?

Please move this thread to correct forum

If you have time you could detail imagemagick install here and links to other threads I should read

Thanks Mike

Hi Ben,

Yes, please re-send the login info, I didn't keep it. PayPal sounds great, thanks.

As for other threads to read, I guess it depends on what you want to know... there's a lot of info here,  but not all of it applicable to what you're trying to do.

I can send you a list of what was required to install ImageMagick when I'm done if you'd like. Other than that, it'd just be a guess based on past experiences:

download, unpack, configure, make, make check, make install, for example...

Cheers

Thanks, got both the info and the payment... ImageMagick needs root shell access, which I couldn't obtain given the info... If you're running under an ISP (as opposed to running the server yourself) they're unlikely to give that out, though you might be able to convince them to install ImageMagic.

If you want, I can talk to your ISP to see if I can get them to do it... Just let me know how I can get in touch with them.

Cheers

The control panel is at:
http://www.handebox.com:2082/frontend/bluelagoon/index.html
The user name and password are the same as the ftp I sent.
The alternative is to host this on a server that has image magick installed, if we have any problems we will step up another account with a host you recommend
Thanks Mike

With further thought lets go with your server

Using my T3 Aussie server was ok for the sea trials but now that I see that album.pl is ideal for our purposes we do not need to waste your time with server side issues.

Please set up hosting account and install for us.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what a good ISP with ImageMagick might be. I'm my own ISP so I don't have experience with others... (Unfortunately, I don't think I could host your site effectively...)

Maybe someone here can make a suggestion...

I have contacted your provider though to see if they'll consider installing ImageMagick. (Hope you don't mind.)

I looked around the control panel, and it looks like there aren't even any Perl modules I might be able to use. (I.E. Coding album.pl to use Image::Magick or GD::Image to gen the thumbnails...)

Thanks for contacting handlebox, I will wait for the reply, but if it does not come soon we will find another host.

A quick search shows many hosting companies that have imagemagick installed, we will switch to one of these.

Should I ask in a new topic if anyone can make recommendation?

Whilst this is outside of your normal support perhaps would it be of assistance to album.pl users to set up an affiliate/reseller type relationship with a reliable host that suits all requirements?

Anyway I am happy with which ever is easiest for you as I do not wish to waste your time on unsuitable hosts.
Thanks Mike

Hi Ben,

Sure a new thread wouldn't be out of place at all... That way neither of us have to spend a lot of time when I'm sure people can rattle of a good ISP pretty quickly.

If you have a preferred host you'd like to deal with already in mind though, we can give them a shot.

I haven't heard back from handlebox yet...

Cheers

Do I need image magick?
It was the thumbnails that where the problem, but I removed the height setting and they display OK now.
What are the main reasons for using imagemagick?

One thing that is troubling me is can we log in automatically i.e. cookie?

Also how can I control the maximum size of images?

Thanks Mike

ImageMagick is used for:

1. Creating porportional thumbnail files automatically. (This saves bandwith and speeds up the album, since small thumbnail files are used, instead of the full size images themselves.)

2. Resizing images on upload.

3. Performing post upload functions, such as watermarking, rotating, etc. (These are pretty advanced usually.)

Although you won't have UBB cookies since you're on a different server, you will have album.pl cookies, set once the user logs in for the first time. These can be disabled if you'd like, but then a user has to log in every time they visit.

You can set an upload size limit to restrict large images from being uploaded, or use ImageMagick to resize (scale) images as they're uploaded. Or you can use both together.

The thumbnails you have now appear scaled, but if you uplaod really high or a really wide image, it's thumbnail will look unusual. Probably a small price to pay...

I have set up a hosting account for the site on a server with imagemagick installed,
I have copied my album.pl files over and it seems to be ok, whilst I have a few errors I just need to config it, I hope.
With any luck I will not need to much support here.

Success!

It's now woring, including ImageMagick! I fixed up the incorrect config items and uploaded the missing images. I've also tested authentication, uploads, deletion, etc. Looks like it all works!

Good stuff!
